Web Design

I began working for the University of Arizona in 2005 and immediately began work on designing and implementing a new web site for the University's main web presence. The experience opened my eyes to the belief that the web was truly more than just a place to sell or buy things or post drunken photos of your friends. From this point on I will always consider the world wide web university of arizona web site to be an incredibly powerful tool that can be used to communicate ideas large and small and to anyone, anytime, at anywhere in the world where there is a computer hooked up to the internet. This is a powerful form of communication.

Like all communication however, there needs to be a clearly defined set of rules in order to assure everyone with access can understand what you are trying to say. I learned much about this process working for the U of A and its web viewing community of around 100,000 people across the globe. Not only were my communication skills honed, I was also pressed to learn everything I could to insure that the web sites I built worked on any type of computer, browser or operating system. It is a belief that I continue to hold at the core of my design philosophy to this day.

Virtual Horton

This is one of my personal favorites. I liked this project so much that I am now in the process of making it better. For the last few years it has been laying dormant, somehow stuck thinking it is perpetually nighttime in Northern Michigan. Perhaps I should explain what it is I am talking about. This web project is a dynamic representation of my childhood home in Northern Michigan where my father now It is located on Lake Charlevoix and was an incredible place for a young boy to grow up.virtual horton I have many incredible memories of the place and many of those memories show up here.

I say the project is dynamic because it uses local time, day of the year, moon phases and current weather conditions to create the images that appear in your web browser.virtual horton If it is dark in Michigan, the site will show nighttime. The same goes for over 100 different situations like, rain, wind, snow, sunsets, falling leaves in autumn, deer and other animals including the occasional fish jumping from the water at dusk on calm summer nights.

Right now however, the site has been stuck at night, leaving all my recollections of the place in the dark. Now that I will have more time, I plan to redo this site from the ground up, changing graphics, making more realistic representations and improving the engine that drives everything byvirtual horton building it in Flash AS 3 for improved stability and easier updating. In addition, I will be adding a control panel so that those of us who are less patient will be able to change the settings themselves instead of having to wait all year to see all the site has to offer.

NAU site

>>  Visit This Project

This project is a web portal aimed at high school juniors and seniors to not only attract them to enrolling at NAU, but also to make sure to attract the right type of student and help solve some of the school's attrition problems. I worked very closely with programmer Curtis Harvey on this project and I think it was very successful in terms of what the client, NAU, had asked for. However, I do not believe they ever launched the project.

Religious Studies

This is a departmental web site for the Religious Studies program at the University of Arizona. It was created using XHTML/CSS and includes some Flash components for video and motion features. I was also responsible for all the photography in this project. The site included a CMS and maintenance of the site is now left in the hands of the department, assuring that they are keeping faculty and students up to date.

NaturArte is a Bi-National, Interdisciplinary Wetlands Conservation Project in Sonora, Mexico.image of mexico The project is one of many efforts by CEDO, an intercultural center for the study of deserts and oceans aimed at preserving and protecting several natural estuaries along the Northern stretches of the Gulf of California. This web site was presented at SIGGRAPH's 34th annual conference in August 2007 as part of SIGGRAPH’s gallery exhibition titled Global Eyes. The goal of the gallery exhibition was to show work that "expands our humanity by extending our awareness of people and nature”.

I designed and produced this interactive Flash based multimedia project which uses RSS feeds to dynamically draw itself based on current tidal conditions in the Gulf of California.image of mexico The project features high definition digital video, still photography and audio clips from six estuaries in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. Interactive maps of the estuaries provide a visual reference for additional information about the natural history, the ecological effects of tourist development, and the role of art in the public’s perception of our relationship to the natural world.

No! this is not porn. This site is a online documentation of a yearly trip that myself and some friends have been taking since we were all very young boys, thirsty for beer and a place far away from our parents to drink it. We found this refuge on a small archipelago in the northern water of Lake Michigan. Beaver Island not only became a place for us to drink ourselve into oblivion, it also became a place for me to learn how to document events, not as afly on the wall but rather as an active participant in the events. This was a great leap forward for me as a photographer and as a human being. The trips continue to this day and eventually, I will catch up with them on this site. Until then, feel free to explore these pitorial memories as they lay inside my head, somewhat scattered...
